Choosing a Blog Host for a Marketing Blog

Written by: mjmccoy  On January 26th, 2010

Everyone who is engaged in website marketing should consider finding a blog host in order to start a marketing blog. A blog can increase online visibility, encourage customer loyalty, and build an online presence for any company who uses one.

Free Blog Hosts

A blog host can be a third-party host that takes care of the hosting of the site and assigns a sub-domain to the blog. Blogger, a free blog host owned by Google, is one such host. It is a simple blogging site that is useful for beginning bloggers who need to build a blog that can be up and running in minutes. It is partially customizable, but the domain name is not owned by the blogger.

Another, similar blog host is LiveJournal. This is another free site that assigns subdomains and makes the blog easy to customize. It is also a good site for beginners to the blogosphere.

Blog Domain Names

For bloggers who want to own their own domain name and to have a blog that is completely customizable, there are a few ways to use a blog host. The first step is generally to buy a domain name and to choose a host for the site. This can be a paid host, such as BlueHost or MonsterHost, or it can be a free host like Google Sites.

For many blog hosts, the use of WordPress blog formatting is integrated into the hosting. With these sites, one or two clicks will take you from a blank website to one that is formatted with WordPress and ready to use. For other blog hosts, a marketing blog will have to be built up from scratch by either uploading a blog format from scratch or by creating a new format for the blog to use.

Choosing Between Hosts

The choice between a blog host that takes care of much of the set up and a blog host that leaves it all up to the blogger often depends on how much experience the blogger has and how quickly the blogger needs the site to be set up and ready. For some companies, blog marketing needs to be implemented as soon as possible, and the domain name is not a big consideration.

For other companies, having a top-level domain name is important. For those companies, purchasing a domain name is an important part of the company’s image. In this case, the blog host that is chosen should be one that allows for all the customization that the company needs in order to incorporate the exact image that is needed.
